A place to live

To achieve the best possible results, we have special indoor brood stock plants, where the Sterling™ White Halibut spend the first time of their life. This is a very protected environment, with great amounts of fresh seawater. Each fish has its own living quarters!

After a while the fish move to selected fjords, where it lives in open sea net pens. The living areas are expanded as the fish grow. This give the Sterling™ White Halibut spacious living and room to move around, and also rest.

The first 18 months:

It takes 18 month for the baby Sterling™ White Halibut to grow from a tiny egg to a small fish. (klekkeri/yngelanlegg)

The mother fish is naturally reproductive for three to four times each year. The fertilized eggs are put in dark containers, and after 13-20 days the eggs are ready. Out come a little larval together with a plum sack, to feed on. After that food is gone, the fish start eating food from the sea, like plankton or tiny crayfish. The metamorphosis starts with one eye moving so that both eyes are on the same side. The fish is getting flatter and start searching for bottom life. After the metamorphosis the fish feed on dry food, and is moved to a land based plant. This is the start of a long process, where the Sterling™ White Halibut is growing and is moved to different production facilities, to maximize health and growth.babyfisk

Life until 3 years of age

When the Sterling™ White Halibut is around 350 to 400 gram, it moves to the land plant, with more space. It slowly grows to 1,5 to 2 kilogram, then the time has come for the fish to start living in the sea. We have an innovative hanging “shelf” system, also called Sterling™ White Halibut “apartments”. The fish lives in this protected environment for two years; harvest time has come when the fish has an average weight of 6 kilogram. The feed is based on marine raw materials from sustainable marine ingredients.DSC_0682

Fully grown fish

The harvest time for Sterling™ White Halibut means that the fish is collected in special well boats, and transported to the processing plant. There it is sedated and slaughtered in a quick and painless manner. The meat is packed and ready to be transported to go to top restaurants all over the world. Some fish are also filleted and made into portion packages.KveiteAkademi_104
