The first 18 months:
It takes 18 month for the baby Sterling™ White Halibut to grow from a tiny egg to a small fish. (klekkeri/yngelanlegg) The mother fish is naturally reproductive for three to four times each year. The fertilized eggs are put in dark containers, and after 13-20 days the eggs are ready. Out come a little larval together with a plum sack, to feed on. After that food is gone, the fish start eating food from the sea, like plankton or tiny crayfish. The metamorphosis starts with one eye moving so that both eyes are on the same side. The fish is getting flatter and start searching for bottom life. After the metamorphosis the fish feed on dry food, and is moved to a land based plant. This is the start of a long process, where the Sterling™ White Halibut is growing and is moved to different production facilities, to maximize health and growth. |
For the first time in Bocuse d’Or history, a branded fish will play a leading role: our own Sterling White Halibut. Our halibut is no newcomer to the competition though; Marine Harvest supplied halibut to the Bocuse d’Or 2007 under the generic brand Norwegian White Halibut in co-operation with the Norwegian Export Council.
